Krento is a modern desktop organizer which combines the functionality of the Application Launcher, Application Dock and Widget Engine in one small and powerful application. Unlike other similar applications Krento is more oriented on functionality than on decoration.

Krento is an application launcher and widget engine. It allows you to easily launch applications on your computer and to create shortcuts for nearly every type of file. From what I have seen, Krento is more an application launcher than a widget engine. It calls widgets as "toys' and they can be added via the user interface, but I didn't see any place to download them from.
As an application launcher/manager, Krento has some advantages and a few disadvantages, but it all boils down to personal preference. The application will not index your computer to find applications or files. You have to add them manually to the user interface.
Krento doesn't look too fancy, but they have given more importance to other things other than its looks. You can either launch Krento by double-clicking the transparent icon that it places at the bottom-right corner of your screen, or by using the keyboard shortcut. When you activate it, Krento puts up a wheel with a few buttons, or stones. These stones have specific actions assigned to them. You can launch Internet Explorer, do a Google search, open the Control Panel or the Task Manager, go to Wikipedia, etc. You can create different stones by dragging an application to one of the available slots. The limit of stones seems to be twelve. If you want to quickly open a stone without calling up Krento first, you can use a keyboard shortcut like Ctrl + F12, for example.
The idea behind Krento is nice. I like the other type of application launcher, the one that indexes my apps and does all the work for me. The limit of 12 apps per circle isn't going to cut it. At least for me. You can add more circles, but who wants to browse a countless number of circles when you can use other apps and simply type the three first letters of an app's name and launch it? |
